Decoding ACIM: An Online Class in 12 Weekly Sessions

Purpose: This multiple session ACIM study plan is designed to familiarize students with the main principles, terms and concepts that are encountered in A Course In Miracles’ textbook. ACIM uses common terms in uncommon ways. The study plan for each class teaches the participant the core concepts found in the ACIM text thereby enabling the student to complete their own study of ACIM either independently or in a group setting. No previous study of ACIM is required. These multiple session study plans for classes will provide students with a firm platform for their ongoing personal study of A Course in Miracles.

Since ACIM’s text utilizes common English language terms in unique and often different ways, it becomes imperative that the student defines these terms in that same unique ACIM manner. Unless students are able to temporarily disregard their past definitions and understandings associated with these common terms, they will be confused by the special way ACIM uses those same terms. The student must learn to decode this unique ACIM terminology by adopting the new definitions for these previously familiar terms. . For example, unless one realizes that when ACIM uses the word REAL it is referring to the changeless eternal, he or she will confuse the world of individualize physical perception with the eternal. Unless one realizes that when ACIM uses the word UNREAL, it is talking about the world that we normally perceive as our physical reality, the student will be lost. If one chooses to call a cat by the letters spelled D-O-G, it is still a cat. Yet, to anyone lacking the decoding manual the concept will be interpreted incorrectly. Thus ACIM often becomes incomprehensible to the reader. Words are merely symbols for ideas. When two parties attempt to communicate yet lack common agreement as to how words are defined, there will be a failure to communicate. By adopting this study plan, you will be given the decoding manual. This study plan removes the mystery by decoding the uniquely defined terminology of A Course in Miracles. ACIM now becomes a course that offers practical guidance on the path toward inner peace in this world of individualized perception. This class also provides numerous personal exercises to assist the student in uncovering blocks that are impeding the practical application of ACIM into their daily lives.

Study Method: We will utilize recordings, commentaries, lectures, exercises, group discussions and readings from the text to broaden our understanding of the course materials. Each week specific concepts and topics of the course will be covered with an emphasis on terms and their special meanings as defined by the text itself. In order to combine the theoretical with the experiential, personal exercises will be provided and the first sixty lessons of the ACIM Workbook for Students will be covered. This should allow the participants to obtain a working knowledge of the course so that they can incorporate the course teachings into their daily life.
Homework Assignment: Review five daily ACIM lessons a week, study handouts and complete the weekly exercises.

Goal: To help participants understand that the purpose of the Course in Miracles is to assist the student to change, not the world, but rather, how they choose to view their world.

Additional Study Materials: These study plan classes can be used in conjunction with A Course In Miracles For Dummies. The function of ACIM for Dummies is to decode the Course In Miracles Text thus making it easier to read and understand. It does this clarification of the text by replacing pronouns and vague references with their antecedents. Like Decoding & Living a Course in Miracles classes, ACIM for Dummies makes the text more comprehensible and less mystifying.
